Project overview
Ulan West is located within the Ulan Coal Mines Limited (UCML) complex located near the village of Ulan in the central west region of NSW, approximately 45km north north-west of Mudgee and 25km north-east of Gulgong. UCML currently operates the Ulan No.3 Underground mine and Surface Facility including a coal preparation plant.
Ulan West is planned to operate as an underground mining operation concurrently with Ulan No.3 Underground mine until 2021 and then continue production as the only mining operation at UCML until mine closure in approximately 2029. Ulan West is targeted to produce an average 6.86Mt of ROM coal per year once the longwall commences production. The seam section to be mined is the same seam section currently mined at Ulan No.3 Underground (basal 3m of the 7m Ulan seam).
ROM coal will either bypass the existing coal preparation plant or be processed in the existing coal preparation plant as required to meet marketing requirements. The mine is designed as a high capacity, owner-operated underground longwall mine with measured resources of approximately 126Mt of ROM coal and a projected life of approximately 16 years from first longwall coal.
Project approvals
Xstrata PLC announced its approval of the US$1.1 Billion Ulan West Project on 3 August 2010. Final Government approvals to allow the project to move to execution were received in November 2010.

Please note that tenders will only be invited from suppliers who can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the project an acceptable level of performance on recent contracts of similar size and complexity, and have demonstrated the necessary financial and management strengths and capabilities to undertake contracts of similar size.
