Ulan Coal Mines Limited (UCML) is a producer of high quality thermal coal mined from the Ulan Seam which is a geological sequence within the broader Permian Illawarra Coal Measures.

UCML currently consists of:

  • Ulan Open Cut Mine (under contract to Roche Mining)

In underground operations the lower three metre section of the Ulan seam is mined to produce Ulan ‘premium’ coal. In the open cut the seam is mined in two sections, above and below a clay band, to maximise production. Above the clay band, three seams are mined producing ‘domestic’ coal. Below the clay band, the lower bench is mined to give “thermal coal”.

The type of coal product produced at UCML falls into the following three categories:

Premium 54%
Thermal 8.5%
Standard 0.5%
Domestic 37%

Under current approvals, UCML can extract and produce up to 10 million tonnes per year of product coal and transport it by rail to either domestic customers or to port for export overseas.
