community meetings
In 2002 the Ulan Mine Community Consultative Committee (CCC) was developed. The CCC currently comprises a total nine members including; six community representatives and two mine representatives. A Councillor from Mid Western Regional Council chairs meetings. Government representatives periodically attend.
Meetings of the CCC are held four times a year and the minutes of meetings are distributed to the CCC members within one month of the meeting taking place. The local community representatives are selected after advertisements calling for members in local newspapers.
The CCC enhances the relationship with the community by providing effective tools for the early engagement and exchange of information between UCML and the surrounding community. The community representatives share information from meetings with the wider community and bring back items for discussion at the CCC meetings. The CCC reviews and provides advice on the environmental performance of the development, including any construction or environmental management plans, monitoring results, audit reports, or complaints.
The mine representatives use the meetings as an opportunity to respond to any advice or recommendations the Committee may have in relation to the environmental management or performance of the development. Site inspections of the mine by the Committee are arranged on a regular basis, if required.
