Ulan Coal Mine

Ulan Coal Mines Ltd (UCML) is one of the most established coal mining operations in the western coalfields of NSW and one of the State’s leading exporters of thermal coal. UCML consists of both open cut and underground coal mining operations to the west and north of the mining lease, respectively. The complex is managed by Xstrata Coal Australia Pty Limited, which owns 90% of UCML. Joint Venture partner Mitsubishi Development holds the remaining 10%.

UCML operates a twenty four hour operation and includes a coal handling a preparation plant (CHPP), conveyors, a drag line, stockpiles, a rail to port facility, administration buildings, and an underground access point. Open cut mining ceased in 2008 as the approved resource had been exhausted.

UCML currently operates under four major Development Consents, 18 modifications and numerous other minor approvals for various mining related activities across the complex.  UCML is seeking one consolidated Project approval to cover current and proposed operations for the next 21 years.  This project is known as Ulan Coal – Continued Operations (the Project).  As part of this Project, UCML is proposing to  recommence and extend the existing open cut in an area currently approved for highwall mining as well as concurrently mining the approved Ulan No.3 Underground and approved Ulan West area under a modified mine plan.
